Cross Country Inter-school

On Thursday we had our cross country tournament. It was held at Bailey Road school., It was raining but it was still on. Everyone was so nervous to verse other schools. So when we got there we saw all the schools having fun. First we looked around where we were running. It was a bit slippery when your running up and down the hill. So first was the year 1's girls and boys altogether even the others, Second year 3's, third year 4's, after year 5's, then year 6's, I think 20 minutes after year 7's and then 20 minutes than 10 miutes and than 2 minutes it was the year 8's I was so nervous, I looked right, left, right, left over and over again. Just before we started we done some stretchers some we can warm up we had to where these wrest bands so they would know our year level the year 8's one was the colour green. We had to do 4 laps around the whole school it was so hard that it was slippery that it made it so difficult for us to get up the hill and then down the hill. I fell most times but at least I finished the race. Thank you to Mrs Anderson and Mrs Millward for supporting us and taking photos also to the bus driver for transporting us to Bailey Road school. Everyone had fun and enjoyed there time, Also congratulations to Zahn for coming 1st overall, It would take a lot of effort to come first.

How The National Anthem came to Tonga

How The National Anthem came to Tonga

Long time ago there lived a Tongan islander girl. Her name was Umu. She was so good at rugby that her own school calls her tiger. They call her that because she is the only girl that can bump off a boy. On the other side there was her annoying mother Mele, she is a lady who likes to show off Umu’s majestic tau'olunga in front of the other special and rich ladies. Also her beautiful lovely grandma Kalo she has been in Tonga ever since so she knows everyone in Nuku’alofa. Umu has been watching rugby ever since she was a little fragile baby with her cousins. When Umu was growing up she had one thing missing that wasn’t right at that time. She screamed “THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!!!”

Next morning Umu kept thinking of the national anthem when she got to school everyone was cheering for Tonga because they won their first game, it was like a festival. People were yelling out “Mate ma’a Tonga” but on the other hand Umu felt lost. In her head she kept focusing on the national anthem. Umu quickly ran up to her friends and said “Did you guys notice that we don’t have a national anthem”
Her friends replied “Ummm you don’t even about care about the national anthem because you're called tiger, remember?”. Later it was getting dark so Umu walked home from school. Umu started thinking to make up a national anthem for Tonga. So she went to her mum but she said “‘Ikai!!!!! You have to practise you tau’olunga first”
Umu just grinned at her and just walked away so the only person she knew was her grandma, Kalo. Kalo was so busy with cooking lu sipi but then she saw Umu and yelled “Umu hau’u kehine did you need help with anything”.

So Umu asked her “Nana do you have any ideas because I want Tonga rugby to have an national anthem so that when they compete against another team they can sing it with pride”

Her nana said “You have to know who you are first”
Umu had no idea what she meant so she just wrote it down on her diary, and left saying “Malo aupito nana”. All night Umu stayed up just thinking of some lyrics just to start with. Umu wrote it like she was writing a goodbye letter, but she continued putting her failed pieces in the rubbish. Eventually she tried over and over again until she fell asleep snoring the whole night. Finally it was the next day she got up and looked at herself in the mirror and then “AHHHHHHHH”. Everyone got up to see what happened because they thought Umu was in trouble or something. Umu rushed out the door. While she was walking she heard an angel singing like she was free from everyone and everything. So Umu secretly hid and saw her swirling around with her white elegant dress like she was going to church. While she was singing Umu right away heard these words:

“Oh almighty God above, Thou art our lord and sure defense, As your people, we trust thee, And our Tonga thou dost love, Hear our prayer for thou unseen,

We know that thou hath blessed our land, Grant our earnest supplication, God save Tupou, our king.”

Umu thought of a great idea that she would translate it into Tongan words.
So she was singing it all the way home and her mum Mele heard her singing and said “Umu is that you”
Umu confidently replied “Yes it is me mum, I want to sing this song in front of my whole school”
Umu’s mum said “No because you will make yourself embarrassed in front of everyone how about a tau’olunga?”
Suddenly her grandma casually walked in the room was and she said “If it’s what you want to do then just do it”
Umu had to so….. The next morning it was school time and Umu rashly saw her principal and asked him “Sir for assembly can I sing a song”
The Principal said “Of course you can but remember the king Taufa’ahau Tupou is coming so make this your 100%”
So Umu was really excited and nervous at the same time because the king was coming. So it got to assembly time and they were just inviting King Tupou in their school. Umu got called up to sing and when she was walking everyone was so surprised. At last she got on the stage and looked up and she saw her mum and grandma in the crowd. She started to introduce herself confidently. So she started singing “ʻE ʻotua māfimafi, ko homau ʻeiki koe, ko koe ko e falalaʻanga, mo e ʻofa ki Tonga, ʻAfio hifo ʻemau lotu, ʻaia ʻoku mau faí ni, mo ke tali homau loto, ʻo maluʻi ʻa Tupou.”
When King Taufa’ahau Tupou heard his name in it, after Umu sung, King Taufa’ahau Tupou went up to her and said “You have a great voice great personality but can I use you song for our national anthem because Tonga doesn't have one, and we really need one”
Umu face is like shocked she yelled “YES! OF COURSE YOU CAN” everyone started cheering like she graduated. After all she saw her mum crying with tears because she didn’t believe that Umu could do it, but she believed in her so they both hugged each other. Meanwhile she saw her nana Kalo and she said to Umu “You have done it” Umu replied.
“Nana if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be here right now thank you nana so much malo aupito” So the day came Umu had to sing it in front of a whole bunch of people and sang her song for the national anthem everyone was recording it just got RIVAL!! 2 weeks later it was the Tongan rugby game and so Umu and her family watched it and from the start they sung her song and all the rugby players were crying because it was there first time having a national anthem thanks to Umu.

Umu looked at watch she had done. She didn’t do it by herself she had courage from her nana and this is how the national anthem came to Tonga.

So this story took part in the Kingdom of Tonga. This was a long time ago when Tonga didn't even have a national anthem so there lived a teenage girl named Umu. She was a girl that loved to watch Tonga teams compete other countries. So she grew and grew growing older and she realised that "Tonga didn't have a national anthem" and so Umu made up the Tonga national anthem and now it has been Tonga's national anthem for a long time.

Basketball

So on Wednesday we had a basketball game after school. When we got there it was nearly year 5&6's basketball game and so they were excited to go against Glen Taylor. It was a tough game for them but they kept pushing them selves and getting those goals in the hoop unfortunately they lost by 4-10 they were still happy that they all played and worked has a team. Straight after that the year 7&8 went against Point England Blue. They looked hard to go against but we worked collaborative and we communicated very well. So at the end of the game we won to 30-4, so we were proud of what we have done. Thank you to Mrs Parsad for being our other cheerleader and transporting us as well also the RSA and Mr Ogilvie for transporting us as well we really appreciate it.

Can do

So today we had to do one can do. On this DLO is my own one that I made it was stress. What I like about this is that you get an easy word and you try and find some other powerful words to help us understand the that one word.

Maths activate

What we done in maths was the place value follow up. LI: Find the place value in decimals. What I learn about was writing the tenths, hundredths and thousandths in the correct order. We have been learning this for the past few weeks and it has been teaching us a new learning activate. I like doing place value in decimals because it can help you understand tenths, hundredths and thousandths, where you have to put it and how you have to say it as well. One thing I learn was when you have to say the tenths, hundredths and thousandths you have to say the numbers separated like 123.456. For this activate some people got confused by writing it and also when it's written we have to write the number.

Henry Tuipe'a

So today we had special guest come over to Panmure bridge School it was Duffy's little brother his name is Henry Tuipe'a he also brought another guest with him. Henry Tuipe'a was talking about when he was a little kid he said "When I was little I use to always like to go shopping with his mum, and the mum use to always to her friends and talk for 2 hours" so Henry Tuipe'a saw a large building that he never been before he got one and he said "Oh it's a DVD, so he looks in side and he found nothing, so he went up to the lady and Henry Tuipe'a screamed Mrs someone stole a DVD. The old lady was laughing and said "You must be so confused" Henry Tuipe'a "Was like no I know I'm Henry" The lady quietly said to Henry Tuipe'a "It's a book" So from then Henry Tuipe'a started to always like going to the shops with his mum, and looking around in the library and reading some new books. Henry Tuipe'a said "Books as a power" and for us it made us think that we should be reading books. Thank you Henry Tuipe'a for handing out the Duffy books for each classes. I had an awesome time hearing about your story when you were little.

Basketball

On Wednesday we had our basketball game. It was so awesome to see 5&6 having fun against Saint Patrick Gold. The year 5&6 had a draw with them it was 10-10 at least they been improving well done keep it up. When we had our game we were going against Point England Red they were kind of hard but we tried our best to get those goals in the hoop. That is the main thing of basketball or other sports is just getting a ball in the hoop. Congratulation on the win guys keep up the great teamwork.

Cross Country

So today we had our cross country it was sunny and raining. Also every year 5&6 year 7&8 got 2 battens each. Everyone was so excited to go down to Dunkirk and run there. Once we got there we had to sit into our classrooms. First was Year 1's girl and then boy, we all got up and supported them all the way. Second was 2&3 they both had to one lap. Third was 5&6 girls and then boys they had to do 2 and a half lap around like half of the field. And then it was us year 7&8 girls it was awesome to see everyone joining and running. Congratulation to those who came 1st,2nd and 3rd it means you tried really hard to go to the inter-school also if you didn't then at least you participated and took part in the school fun run.

Read Theory

So this is what LS2 does for reading just for 20 mins it's called Read theory. This helps us with our reading also helping to look closely to the questions that they ask us. Read theory has been helping us increase our reading skills. It is helping us practise look back at the text and figure out what the answer is for the question. I like doing read theory because it can help me get to the highest level in reading, also when I'm doing a reading test I would know what to do and what I need more to work on next time.

Care awards - Interviewing my Mum

So on this DLO is one of the tasks on our CARE award. What we had to do was to Interview a person in uniform, and I choose my mum because she is a nurse at Middle More Hospital. I asked her 3 questions. On some of her answers is some hard words do I looked it up and found the meaning to it, what my mum likes to do for her job is that she enjoys saving lives. Also what you can do when your a nurse is meet some new friends just like when you start a new school you got some new friends. The photo is when she graduated her "Bachelor of Nursing" Proud of you mum.

Cross Country

Cross Country

So for the past few weeks on Monday and Tuesdays we have been practising on our running skills in the morning. First we started off with 1 lap around the school then it went to 2,3,4 laps, and this week some of us did 5 and Mr Ogilvie timed us during our practise Mr Ogilvie has been teaching us as some skills like when your running your start with a paste and on your last lap you sprint it all the way, also with your breathing you have to breath into your nose and when you breathe out your mouth it should shape like an "o". Mia and I worked as a team and we finished around the hole school we didn't walked we ran it the hole time, our time was 11.45 minutes. So when it's the real cross country then we would know what to do.
